Everything you are wondering…
I have a class on this day, what do I do?
- Check if you can attend before or after class – Look at the career fair schedule and see if you can go before or after your class. Even a short visit can be valuable.
- Ask your professor – If the fair directly supports your career goals, some professors may allow you to step out for part of the class or provide alternative arrangements. It doesn’t hurt to ask!
How many hours should I plan to be at the fair?
- Roughly 1-1.5 hours: ~15 mins check-in and orientation of the space, depending on the conversations with employers, and 30-60 mins networking with breaks in between.
What do I do with my jacket and backpack when I arrive?
- There will be a coat check room in ASC 366. A volunteer will be present to monitor the space, but they are not responsible for any lost or unattended belongings.
How will I know where the employers I want to talk to are located?
- Reference the map you will receive from the student check-in table. This map will have the booth number and aisle location of each employer attending.
I’m a bit overwhelmed by the space and talking to people, what should I do?
- We’ve set up a designated space for decompressing, complete with fidgets, puzzles, and a staff member available for a pep talk if needed! Located in ASC 367.
If I’m ready to go into the fair, where do I start?
- Take a few deep breaths.
- Walkthrough the room without speaking to anyone and find the employers you planned to meet with
- Listen and observe how others engage with recruiters to inform/personalize your approach.
- Step out of the room and get some water.
- Make a game plan!
- List your employers by the level of interest (#1 being the most interest)
- Add two to three more that were appealing to you as you walked through
- Now, start with the employer of the least priority.
- Starting with the employer of least interest will allow you to practice introducing yourself/executing your elevator pitch and get into the rhythm of speaking with recruiters. You must show an equivalent desire to engage with this employer as your top five.
Reminder:
You can have resources to help you out:
- Prepare your “cheat sheet” of notes on employers that interest you
- Include 2 or 3 specific questions you may want to ask.
- Draft 3-5 talking points for employer conversations.
How am I supposed to remember everything that I learned?!
- Make notes to remember information for your follow-up e-mail/letter
- Take frequent breaks. Review your notes, plan any follow-up actions, and prepare for your next meeting.
Lastly, smile and be engaging! Have FUN!
