Career Competencies Syllabus Language

Supporting student career readiness is an important part of student development at St. Thomas. Being career ready means students understand and have taken steps to gain the key skills and experiences needed to launch and develop a meaningful career after graduation. In addition to the content of this course, students will also have the opportunity to build their skills in the career competencies below. These skills are essential for success in the workplace, and they will be developed through activities in this course:

  • Adaptability: Exhibit flexibility in handling change, being able to juggle multiple demands, and adapting to new situations with fresh ideas or innovative approaches.  
  • Career Management : Active engagement in continued career growth through an understanding of unique skills and experiences as well as connections to career champions.   
  • Communication: Share information, ideas and perspectives clearly and effectively while actively taking in information from the environment.   
  • Creativity: Generate new, varied and unique ideas, and making connections between seemingly unrelated ideas.  
  • Digital Awareness : Understand how to use technologies ethically to advance the common good.    
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion : Respect the dignity of each person for the unique contributions that each person brings.   
  • Professionalism* : Understand the unique culture of each workplace and demonstrate effective work habits that support an equitable work environment.

High Impact Career Practices Sample Syllabus Language

Supporting student career readiness is an important part of student development at St. Thomas. Being career ready means students understand and have taken steps to gain the key skills and experiences needed to launch and develop a meaningful career after graduation. In addition to the content of this course, students will also have the opportunity to participate in activities that will help support career mobility after graduation.

  • Connecting with Alumni  
    • St. Thomas students engage alumni to guide and support their current and future career development. St. Thomas alumni invest their expertise, time and lived experiences to show students the impact of the global Tommie Network and how they can provide that same support for others in the future.  
  • Creating a Career Plan  
    • St. Thomas students can synthesize their learning about career opportunities into a career plan which showcases possible career goals and the next steps needed to achieve them. Students learn to track their career-related goals and understand milestones associated with careers and/or industries.  
  • Having a Career-related Experience  
    • “Hands on” learning provides opportunities for understanding the nature of work within an organization or industry that allows St. Thomas students to apply what they learn in the classroom. Internships, research, and other experiential learning opportunities support students in refining their career goals, targeting their job search, and highlighting the experiences need to be a competitive applicant.  
  • Networking with Employers  
    • St. Thomas students have access to diverse opportunities beyond the recruiting process to engage with employers in ways that grow their understanding of career paths, work cultures and industries available after graduation while building their professional network.  
  • Receiving Helpful Career Advice  
    • Trusted members of the St. Thomas community (including faculty, staff, and alumni) provide the time and space to offer students relevant advice and encouragement for the next steps in their career development. As students assess their career options, they have access to relevant resources to support their informed decision-making.  
  • Understanding Career Opportunities  
    • During their time at St. Thomas, students gain an understanding of the connections between their academic work, career pathways following graduation, as well as the values driving their career choices. Students learn how to research multiple career paths and evaluate them for further exploration.
