THE PURPOSE: This posting is designed to recruit both new and experienced Registered Nurses in all specialties, and also Per Diem Nurse Externs in various departments.
Per Diem Nurse Extern
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Practices empathic communication with patients and provides additional support to patients and families to ensure needs are met.
- Assists in the development and/or modification of a basic written patient care plan; assists in evaluating effectiveness of patient care plan.
- Makes recommendations for modifications in the patient care plan based upon evaluations and new assessment data.
- Provides basic bedside nursing care to assure comfort and cleanliness of patients; takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, bathes, shaves, feeds, and addresses patients and assists those capable of self-care.
- Collects, tests, and records results of routine specimen examinations; gives patients bedpans, removes and cleans them, and records intake and output of patients; may assist in the administration of such treatments as suctions, soaks, and enemas.
- Assists doctors or examiners with IV’s, pelvic exams, spinal taps, or other medical procedures; assists patients in getting into and out of bed and wheelchairs; lifts or assists in lifting, restraining, and positioning patients.
- Transports patients to and from units; assists in giving physical therapy and occupational therapy treatment.
- Other duties may be assigned up to the level of the training of the incumbent. No duties will be assigned that are specifically excluded by CA Bus & Prof Code § 2725.3.
Registered Nurse I/II – Regular and Per Diem:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Uses the full scope of the Nurse Practice Act to assess, plan, organize, and provide nursing care to assigned patients;
- Follows prescribed doctors’ orders concerning treatments and medications;
- Documents patient treatment and dispensing; makes patient observations; records and reports on all pertinent information, including changes in patient condition and general progress;
- Provides follow-through on judgment within the scope of accepted nursing practice;
- Assists doctors in examination and treatment;
- Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift;
- Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of new and ancillary personnel;
- Maintains current knowledge of nursing care developments and therapeutic measures; attends department in-services and staff development programs;
- In Ambulatory Medicine areas, provides physician assistance and patient care as indicated and required;
- May participate in quality assurance/utilization review or other non-direct patient care nursing assignments; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
Per Diem Nurse Extern:
EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE
- Requires current enrollment in an accredited Registered Nurse program and within 3 months of graduation; OR
- Recently graduated from an accredited Registered Nurse program.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certificate
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in California and successful completion of unit related competencies is required within 6 months of hire date.
- Successful completion of the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment into either one of those positions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES (Per Diem Nurse Extern):
Working knowledge of: the theory, techniques and practices of professional nursing; knowledge of medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment.
Ability to: establish and maintain the confidence of and effective working relationships with other professional nursing and medical staff; establish and maintain the confidence of patients; follow hospital policies and instructions; and work effectively in different hospital departments or on shifts as required.
Registered Nurse I/II – Regular and Per Diem:
RN I & PD RN
Requires no experience.
RN II & PD RN II – VCMC & SP Hospital
Requires six (6) months of recent full-time acute care registered nursing experience in an acute hospital or equivalent setting, or completion of the Ventura County Medical Center competency requirements* as evaluated and approved by the Chief Nursing Executive.
RN II & PD RN II – Ambulatory Care & Public Health only
Requires six (6) months of recent full-time equivalent registered nursing experience in a public or private health care setting.
*These competency requirements are in conformance with the California Board of Registered Nurses nursing requirements.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California, or Registered Nurse licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
- Must have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment.
- Successful completion of the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment is mandatory for assignments within the Health Care Agency.
- Depending upon area of assignment, additional specialty experience and/or certification(s) may be required.
