Career Growth Diaries – Day 1 – Reality Check

Searching for a job can be one of the most defining and disorienting experiences of a professional journey, especially in a soft market.

Whether you’re pursuing a master’s degree, pivoting careers, or preparing for graduation, many of us start with a plan: sharpen our skills, grow our network, secure an internship, and move confidently into a full-time role. But as 2025 has shown, even the best-laid plans can meet a market that doesn’t respond as expected.

The reality? Hiring has slowed across multiple industries. According to LinkedIn’s Economic Graph, hiring is down 4.8% compared to last year. Unemployment has inched up to 4.0% as of mid-2024. Job postings, especially entry-level and internship opportunities, have decreased. And even well-qualified candidates are finding themselves in longer-than-expected job hunts.

Many report months of effort customizing resumes, preparing for interviews, and networking with intention, only to receive polite rejections or, in some cases, silence. These experiences can feel discouraging and deeply personal, but they reflect a broader trend that’s impacting job seekers everywhere.

If your job search isn’t going the way you imagined, you’re not alone. The path may be slower or more winding than expected, but that doesn’t mean you’re off track. In fact, the ability to adapt, persist, and grow through uncertainty is often what defines a great career. Rejection doesn’t mean failure. More often, it means redirection.

At the Career Development Center, we understand what this moment feels like, and we’re here to support you. Whether you want to refine your resume, practice for interviews, or rethink your approach entirely, we’re ready to help you move forward with purpose and confidence.
