Are you ready for the Career Fair?

One day, while strolling through the narrow streets of an Italian city, I saw a sign in front of a gourmet restaurant that I loved but had never been able to afford: “We’re hiring!” It was some years ago. I had no idea what they were looking for, and I had absolutely no experience working in a restaurant. I was an undergraduate student with less-than-perfect Italian, but I decided to shoot my shot.

I didn’t even have a resume with me. I just went inside and found the owner, a warm, bonarious man with gray hair and a pair of glasses I still remember. He greeted me with, “How may I help you?” I said, “I saw you’re hiring, and I am looking for a job. My name is ….” He asked, “What do you know? What can you do?”

I began by sharing my major, the languages I spoke, and my extensive hosting experience gained at my mom’s house (By the way, my mom is a fantastic host!). He then asked if I had a CV. I said no, but I could bring it that afternoon. He replied, “If you can bring your CV tonight, you can come for a trial. You’ll be paid for it.”

From that evening, a beautiful adventure began. I loved working there, learned so much, met many famous people, and, most of all, gained a new family. Lele and his wife, Rita, the owners of the restaurant, became my family in Italy.

All this to say: just like that day, career fairs are about showing up and taking chances! Bring yourself to the career fair! Be prepared (it is important) if you can, with your resume, your elevator pitch, and some research on the companies. But if not, still come. Most importantly, bring your confidence. The companies are there for you. Showcase yourself, be ready to build skills, have fun, and extend your family.

Good luck, and don’t forget to follow up! We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming career fairs.
